10th Anniversary - 2001

The first decade in LGS history has been a targeted road towards professional improvement and development. In a relatively short period LGS has become one of the most professional ANSPs in the world.

Even though the air traffic management system corresponds to the highest international standards, LGS plans to invest 2.5 million Lats in streamlining and extension of the system in 2000.

Work at installation of a new ultra-short wave communication system has been completed. Introduction of additional functions to the automated civil air traffic management system - ATRACC has been scheduled for end 2000.

LGS supports development of regional airports. LGS believes in their future development prospects, today proving it by support activities at Liepāja, Ventspils and Daugavpils airports. LGS strongly supports co-ordinated state policy regarding the regional airports.

LGS experts regularly participate in different international programs and projects of civil aviation organisations. For example, LGS participates in the project on air space planning in compliance with the requirements of the Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) programme of EUROCONTROL.

LGS recognizes the importance of support to culture, sports and science funding events organised by the Latvian Olympic Committee; events and programs of the Culture Foundation, for example, Kremerata Baltica of Gidon Kremer, a violin virtuoso of Riga origin ranking among the world music stars. Being aware of relationship between the industry's success and scientific achievements LGS will grant bi-annual Awards to Latvian scientists and practitioners for their excellent performance or lifelong contribution into the cosmic information technology, engineering developments of air navigation and radio location equipment. This intention was on April 5, 2001 corroborated in a trilateral co-operation agreement between LGS, the Academy of Sciences and the Council of the Target Programme “For Education, Science and Culture” of the Latvian Education Fund.
