U.S. Trade and Development Agency (US TDA) has provided Grant to Develop the Study on Latvian ATM Advanced Modernization

2008.09.29.

On Tuesday September 23, Mr. Charles Larson, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia and Mr. Janis Marsans, Chairman of the Board, LGS signed the Grant Agreement. The Grant of $ 690 170 was allocated by USTDA and funds the development of a comprehensive modernization plan to accommodate the challenge of increasing traffic in the Latvian airspace. 





Latvian VFR Guide published

LGS together with Aviation Engineering Group has published the Latvian VFR Guide.





e-AIP of Latvia published

2008.01.17.

In December 2007 the development of the eAIP of Latvia was successfully completed. The eAIP was developed and produced in accordance with the Eurocontrol eAIP specification. This new aeronautical information product was created in conformity with the European Convergence and Implementation Plan, ECIP INF03 to endow users with improved aeronautical information.

LGS launches ATIS/VOLMET/D-ATIS/D-VOLMET & Departure Clearance (DCL)

2007.11.21.

On 7 November LGS  launched operation of the ATIS/VOLMET/D-ATIS/D-VOLMET & Departure Clearance (DCL) system. The system provides ATIS/VOLMET broadcasts on ultra short waves and via data-link, as well as the digital Departure Clearance procedure. This service operates trough ACARS network and supports aircraft equipped with ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) which is ARINC 623 compliant.





D-ATIS/D-VOLMET broadcasts

State Joint Stock Company “Latvijas Gaisa Satiksme” has started ATIS/VOLMET broadcasts on test mode via data-link. This service operates trough ACARS network and supports aircraft equipped with ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) which is ARINC 623 compliant.

Era to Provide Wide Area Multilateration and ADS-B Surveillance in Latvia

Latvijas Gaisa Satiksme (LGS) has selected Era Corporation to provide a wide area multilateration solution for Riga International Airport. Era’s solution utilizes its industry-renowned MSS sensors, which will be strategically placed to provide optimal surveillance coverage. 





LGS Aeronautical Information Service, Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Agency and Civil Aviation Agency sign Service Level Agreement

2007.04.04.

On 29 March 2007 the Service Level Agreement (SLA) was signed between LGS Aeronautical Information Service (AIS), Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Agency (LEGMA) and the Civil Aviation Agency (CAA). This is a result of the cooperation between Latvia and Eurocontrol CHAIN (Controlled & Harmonised Aeronautical Information Network) activity through a pilot implementation for SLA in relation to overall improvements in the upstream data operations.





Thales awarded contract to modernize Surveillance System for provision of ATS in Latvia

2007.02.12.

Paris / Riga – Latvijas Gaisa Satiksme (LGS) and Thales announce the signature of a contract for the procurement of three new radar stations. Under the terms of the agreement, Thales will provide three radar stations to LGS – one primary and secondary station will be deployed in Riga, and two secondary stations in Cirava and Ergli, in replacement of existing stations.





LGS is a certified air navigation service provider and fully compliant with the EU requirements

2006.12.28.

On 20 December LGS was granted a certificate ranking among the certified ANSPs of the European Union.

Pursuant to the European Commission Regulation No. 2096/2005 laying down common requirements for the provision of air navigation services throughout the Community, air navigation services in the Member States may be provided only by ANSPs, which comply with the Common Requirements. It allows for provision of cross-border air navigation services in Europe and is binding to the Member State air navigation service providers as of 2007.





LGS inaugurates the A-SMGCS

2006.11.10.

The other day LGS celebrated inauguration of the new Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System, A-SMGCS which has been successfully installed and operationally tested at Riga International Airport. The mission which was a part of the ambitious long-term CASCADE project teamed up an international consortium of LGS (Latvia), DORS International (USA), Park Air Systems (Norway), ERA (Czech Republic), SiATM (Sweden) and Terma (Denmark).




Karlis Irbitis’ scholarships awarded

2006.11.10.

On 10 October the Latvian Academy of Sciences, LGS and the Target Programme For Education, Science and Culture of the Latvian Education Fund granted scholarships to 19 students of Riga Technical University and Transport and Telecommunication Institute. The scholarships named to commemorate the outstanding Latvian airplane engineer Karlis Irbitis are awarded annually to scholars and students in the field of space technologies, engineering, air navigation communication and radars.

 

 





Certification of air navigation service providers

2006.10.28.

Pursuant to the European Commission Regulation No. 2096/2005 laying down common requirements for the provision of air navigation services throughout the Community, the ANSP of the Member States which comply with the common requirements should receive a certificate. In January 2006 The Latvian Civil Aviation Agency and Aviation Department of the Ministry of Transport launched the process of certification of LGS.




New MIDAS IV put into operation in Riga Intl Airport

On May 11, putting into operation new automated meteorological system MIDAS IV LGS finalized the project on modernization of meteorological aids in Riga International Airport. The system was purchased from the tender winner, Finnish company VAISALA.




The 2nd edition of the aeronautical chart of Latvia - ICAO 1:500 000

LGS in co-operation with ENVIROTECH has produced the 2nd edition of the aeronautical chart of Latvia - ICAO 1:500 000 effective from 11 May 2006.




Maastricht Ehxibition and Conference celebrates its 15 Anniversary

For 3 days, February 14th to 16th Maastricht (the Netherlands) was the setting for the largest annual ATC exhibition and conference, the biggest one since it started 15 years ago. The organizers told they expected to attract over 4,000 attendees from 80 countries around the world.

 





Air Traffic Control Association celebrates the 50th Conference and Exposition

For four days, 30 October – 2 November, Grapevine (Texas, USA) was the setting for the 50th Annual ATCA Conference & Exposition. For nearly half a century, ATCA has been hosting the finest ATC annual conference and exposition in the community, attracting thousands of delegates, exhibitors and visitors.





New AFTN/NOTAM/OPMET starts operation

The new AFTN/NOTAM/OPMET system put into operation on 25 July 2005 marked a successful conclusion of the project launched in 2003 together with the system’s manufacturer, the US company Global Weather Dynamics Inc.

Aviation meteorology experts meet in Uzbekistan

The sixth Meeting of the Project Team (EANPG METG PT/EAST/6) was held in Tashkent from 30 of May to 2 of June 2005. The meeting was attended by experts from 9 States: Armenia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and also the representative of ICAO European and North Atlantic Office Mr. Bjorn Hellroth.




Estonian colleagues visit LGS

Technical specialists from Estonian Air Navigation Services (EANS) recently visited their Latvian colleagues at LGS to discuss various technical and cooperation issues between the respective departments of both companies.




CANSO 9th AGM and CEOs Conference, Shannon, May 15-18

For four days, May 15th to 18th Shannon (Ireland) was the setting for CANSO AGM and CEOs’ Conference, the annual must-attend event for the senior management of the world’s ANSPs. Hosted by the Irish Aviation Authority in the medieval Bunratty castle, the event this year was focusing on “Change in ANS Culture”.




LGS will hold Information Days

How air traffic is operated, how you become an air traffic controller and what duties they handle at the Air Trafic Control Centre and the Tower - you will have these and other questions answered at LGS Information Days on May 31 at 10:00 and 11:00 and June 1 and 2 at 15:00 and 16:00.  





US colleagues will deliver CNS/ATM Applications Staged Implementation and Conventional Airspace Development Systems

The need for enhanced safety and new technologies cannot be underestimated as the air traffic continues to grow persistently both in the Riga FIR and the Latvian airspace. Amidst the strict requirements of the international aviation bodies and the increasing expectations of the airspace users, LGS has through diligent studies anticipated new ambitious long-term projects and put a schedule together to meet these requirements.  This Thursday, April 28 LGS celebrated the signing ceremony of a Contract for a Project named CASCADE with the U.S. Company DORS International Inc.





Riga and Malmo ATC Centres meet on the eve of launch of new operational services in Sweden

2005.04.12.

On 17 March LGS welcomed colleagues from Malmo ATCC, Sweden for a meeting to finalize the preparations for launching the new ATC systems at the new control centres at Malmo - Sturup and Stockholm - Arlanda expected on 19 March 02.00 UTC. We congratulate our Swedish colleagues and share their pleasure for the successful launch of the new ATC systems with no technical or technological complications.





LGS quality management system recertified

LGS quality management system has been recertified and fully complies with the ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard, acknowledges the International certification Company BVQI having on March 8, 2005 extended the quality certificate.




LGS launches Aviation Weather Reporter in Liepaja Airport

The other day LGS Technical Department successfully finalized installation and testing of AW11, new automated weather observation system Aviation Weather Reporter manufactured by a Finnish company “Vaisala Oyj”. The system was put into operation on February 17th 2005 in Liepaja Airport becoming already the second analogous equipment installed in the regional airports of Latvia.




Maastricht showcases the largest annual ATC industry event

The annual ATC Maastricht show, 01-03 February 2005, is a widely recognised event for sourcing of new products and keeping up-to-date with the new ideas and fresh issues. Over the last 14 years the event has been continuously growing and today has become an international meeting place and the must attend event for the worldwide ATC/ATM industry.




Brief flashback on 2004: Riga FIR enjoyed a remarkable number of flights

2005.01.20.
The number of flights in Riga FIR in 2004 when compared to the figures of 2003 has increased for 30.4%. The number of transit flight has grown by 28,2 %, while the figure of flights from/to Riga has rushed up even by 40,1 %. This remarkable increase shall be explained by recovery and stabilization of the aviation market followed up by opening of new routes and by increased number of flights on the existing ones.




Baltic States discuss Integration and Cooperation over the Baltic Sea

2004.12.06.
On 6-7 December 2004 LGS Chairman of the Board participated in the workshop on integration and cooperation over the Baltic Sea. The cooperation dates back to June 2000 when the first Meeting on the Integration and Cooperation over the Baltic Sea induced by ICAO was held in Warszawa. Soon afterwards, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland kicked off with the establishment of a common upper FIR over the Baltic High Sea area.




LGS meets with airlines on Functional Airspace Blocks

On 25 November 2004 LGS was welcoming airlines who responded to the invitation to meet and discuss the issues within the concept of Functional Airspace Blocks to evaluate the Latvian airspace in accordance with the FAB requirements.





ATCA 49th Annual Conference and Expositions

2004.11.02.

Mr. Kizenbahs, CEO and Dr. Khankhaldov, Advisor were LGS delegates at the 49th Annual Conference and Expositions held by the Air Traffic Control Association, ATCA on October 31 - November 3, 2004 in Washington DC, US. This year’s Conference Theme, Global Airspace System: Turning vision into reality involved three extremely busy days of informative topics program combined with one of the largest exhibitions in ATCA history.





LGS and AEROTHAI sign a MOU

2004.10.22.
On October 22 LGS was welcoming a delegation from Thailand Ministry of Transport and the ANS provider, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. The purpose of the visit was to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between AEROTHAI and LGS to establish close cooperation between the two organizations in the areas of air traffic services such as the air traffic control operation and engineering, related infrastructure and technology for communication, navigation and surveillance/air traffic management.




LGS grants Karlis Irbitis’ scholarships

2004.10.19.
On 14 October 2004 the Latvian Academy of Sciences, LGS and the Target Programme For Education, Science and Culture of the Latvian Education Fund granted scholarships named after the outstanding Latvian airplane designing engineer Karlis Irbitis. The total of 14 scholarships was awarded in four nominations: to lecturers/scholars, becoming men of science, Bachelors, Masters, engineers, and students.




Baltics CNS/ATM Transition Project Feasibility Study successfully completed - UPDATED

On 22 and 23 September 2004 LGS hosted the Final Meeting of the Baltics CNS/ATM Transition Project Feasibility Study. For nearly 40 months LGS had been acting on behalf of Baltic ANSPs in the Study aimed at development of National and Sub-regional Plans for Implementation of CNS/ATM in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Plans define short-term needs and long-term prospectives of air navigation systems in all three countries complying with recommendations of international aviation organisations.





Joint CANSO/ETF Conference on Functional Airspace Blocks

Chairman of the Board and Vice President on Technical Issues recently represented LGS at the joint CANSO – ETF Conference on Functional Airspace Blocks (FABs) held in Palermo, Italy on 17 and 18 September 2004 to demonstrate Company’s awareness of a need of close cooperation between all stakeholders to most efficiently address all issues associated with the development of FABs.





New cycle of European Convergence and Implementation Plan

The next cycle of the European Convergence and Implementation Plan (ECIP) has started in the ECAC countries. This planning process is extended to the ANS providers to improve safety, harmonize and provide seamless air navigation environment over the Europe.




Modernization of Surveillance System for provision of ATS in Latvia

In light of near 10 years' operational life of the present Surveillance System LGS recently launched Project for Modernization of Surveillance System for provision of ATS in Latvia.




Technical modernization at Ventspils airport: new Terminal and Tower opened

2004.07.21.
A two years co-operation between Ventspils City Municipality and LGS has come to a successful close with implementation of advanced infrastructure at the airport and for the purposes of ATM. New modern and functional terminal and Tower have been operating the most progressive equipment that ensures air traffic services at any weather.




US FAA visits Latvian aviation

2004.03.17.
On 16 and 17 March 2004 LGS welcomed the US Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA), Mr. Paul Feldman, Director Europe, Africa and Middle East Office and Mr. James Nasiatka, Senior FAA Representative for Russia, CIS and Baltic States who paid a familiarization visit to Latvian aviation.




CNS/ATM project expected to finalise in September 2004

In January 2004 Vilnius hosted the second last meeting of the Working Group (WG) of the Baltics CNS/ATM Transition Project Feasibility Study, nearly three years of intensive endeavours to develop CNS/ATM Transition Plan for the Baltic region.

 





CANSO 7th Annual General Meeting was held in Riga

From June 1-4, 2003 LGS in collaboration with Civil Air Navigation Service Organization was organizing CANSO Annual Conference “Cost Savings and ATM Efficiency”.




LGS signed vendor contract with American company "GWDI"

2003.04.02.
In April LGS signed vendor contract with American company "Global Weather Dynamics Inc." on delivery of the stated aviation communication network system (AFTN/NOTAM). This is already the fifth contract with American companies in four years.




Common ECAC Transition Altitude

In the context of the European Air Traffic Management Program (EATMP) managed by the EUROCONTROL Agency on behalf of the ECAC Member States, the EUROCONTROL Airspace Management and Navigation Unit (AMN) has been working hard to study implementation of a common ECAC transition altitude.
